You might be saying to yourself, I have always wanted to read the Bible but I never knew where to start. People talk about verses, chapters, the Old Testament, the New Testament. You would probably like some guidelines to get you started in getting a feel of the Bible and how to navigate through it.
The Bible is not a single book, but it is rather 66 books that have been brought together under one cover. It was written over a 1,500 year period of time by 40 different authors, representing 40 generations, using 3 different languages7 on 3 continents.
The central message through all 66 books, is man's failure and God rich love to bring man back to Him. He gave all He had to win your love and recieve His forgiveness. The Bible is divided into two parts the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament in a broad sense contains the events that happened before the coming of Jesus and the New Testament about Jesus and the events following His birth.
The Old Testament contains had many events that indicated that foretold when Jesus was coming, where He would be born, how He would heal people and raise people from the dead. All these events are called prophesy. Two thirds of the Bible contains prophesy, half of the prophesies have been fulfilled and the other half is yet to be fulfilled in the future. The Old Testament is also a historical record of the events that took place.
The New Testament contains the life of Jesus Christ, the miracles He performed, His death on the cross for the sins of the world, the good news that anyone could turn from their sins and ask God to forgive them and He would. He came to break the power of sin that has people in bondage to. He has also enlisted the events that will happen in the end times before He comes back to judge the world and receive those who turned from their sins and received His forgiveness.
The Bible has been preserved over time, despite the enormous attempts to destroy it.
In the mid-1700’s Voltaire, one of the most influential writers of his day, held a copy of the Bible in his hand and stated that within 100 years from his time, Christianity would be “swept from existence and pass into the dust bin of History”. However, 50 years after Voltaire’s death, the Geneva Bible Society, used his house and printing press to print and distribute thousands of Bibles.
Reading the Bible
To start reading the Bible, you can open the your Bible (if you don't have a bible you can click on the menu on the top and read the Bible online) to the table of contents and find where its says John. The book of John talks about the miracles Jesus performed, how He met the people who were in sin and came to set them free from their sins, how He suffered and died for our sins, how He rose again from the dead, after three days. It is awesome to see how much He would do to show us that He loves us very much.
